You like really cool bands playing in small clubs? You like live CDs even if the accoustics suck? Then you are going to love this one.
The Violent Femmes have been around for a while now, but "modern rock" stations still play their songs and invite them to shows that they help sponsor. Not too bad for a bunch of guys who are getting up their in age, is it? This CD is a live recording from a set they did in a small Wisconsin club in 1999. The do all the classic songs like "Blister In The Sun," "American Music," and "Add It Up." They also do a ton more songs adding up to just over twenty songs on the CD. A few of these songs are just short ones they've written to make fun of a person or place, like Dahmer or Regan National Airport (which isn't really too bad).
The bad thing about this CD is that the accoustics in the club blew so much that it would've made Luciano Pavorotti sound like a gerbil gargling with Pop Rocks. Even RFK Stadium would've been an accoustical improvement over wherever the hell this was recorded, even during a soccer game. This has the effect of making the lyrics suck a bit and the audience participation becoming so soft a guy with no hands would be able to clap louder.
Okay, I've extolled the good parts and thrashed the bad part, that's it. Overall it's a good CD, but it sounds horrible and the lyrics are hard to understand unless it's being played on good speakers.
